Vegan woman demands neighbours stop using their BBQ due to smell

What is our court system really for? Apparently for neighbours feuding over barbecuing meat!

Perth woman Cilla Carden has been embroiled in a battle with Toan Vu, his wife and children since late 2018. She wanted to take her neighbours to the Supreme Court of Western Australia demanding her neighbours to stop using their BBQ due to the smell wafting into her backyard, but her case was thrown out by both a tribunal court and the Supreme court. On the 4th of September this year an event was made on Facebook where thousands of meat-lovers planned a mass BBQ at the home of vegan woman Cilla Carden next month. More than 2,000 people have said they will attend the so-called Community BBQ, and another 6,000 have expressed an interest.

Many news sites have written about this story and many members of the public have taken to social media to weigh in on the debate. This incident went viral from the many news articles on the story and because it caught the attention of the public due to the level of controversy surrounding the story- people were utterly shocked that someone would take their neighbours to court over such a little thing and was willing to waste the time of the courts when they have bigger matters to attend to. Cilla has received a huge amount of backlash from the public regarding her actions taken against her neighbours.

Social media user Michael A Edwards expressed his opinion on Facebook “This is the only time I’d call for compulsory national service. It’s called communal living. Respecting your neighbours. Which requires you to give up certain expectations. If you want that much freedom move to where there are no other people.” And another member of Facebook, Patricia Newman stated “A neighbour nightmare. Why can’t people just leave people to live in peace. She should respect the people around her and their choices. Each to their own. She should go live in the middle of nowhere… where there’s no one around to upset her sensibilities.” These two comments are just a few of the many comments of backlash Cilla received.

I believe this viral post showcases the dangers of social media as Cilla did one interview on this issue and then many news sites reported on this story which got it out to the public and built momentum, this then resulted in the issue of the Facebook event being created. The event, which was created on a social media forum, where 1000’s of people were wanting to gather outside of this woman’s house, can be very dangerous and can bring up many legal issues for the people participating, such as trespass. I believe people should be able to believe what they want and practice beliefs but I don’t agree with people when they affect others around them by pushing their beliefs on to them. This particular example shows how social media can be used in a negative way.

This incident raises questions as to whether social media is being used in a dangerous way or if it is being used in a way for people to safely and respectively express their views on issues. It also brings up the issue of how many similar incidents are going to happen in the future and is it just becoming the norm for people to use social media in this sort of way.
