What's wrong with the Youtube beauty community?

The YouTube industry is continuously growing and many young individuals have jumped on to the website to share their views, creations, talents, entertainment, and many other genres, with the world. Aside from the bright side of YouTube, there is also a dark side within the platform. With millions of viewers and creators who have accounts, there is just no avoiding people clashing into disagreements and feuds. Specifically creators who have a passion for beauty and make up, their community has recently made a large impact on the YouTube drama and their reputation has evolved into creators who are cutthroat and fake. The only community where a competing vitamin business' could create a problem.

It was back in late April where a problem occurred between James Charles, one of YouTube's fastest growing make up channel, and Tati Westbrook, known for beauty hauls, tips and reviews. It all started when a 43-minute video was uploaded by Westbrook accusing her fellow beauty YouTuber of attempting to “trick a straight man into thinking he’s gay.” Her strong accusations then exploded online with a number of other straight male who Charles had past relations with to come forward and upload their own videos on how he pressured them. Charles then set a Youtube record for most subscribers lost in a 24 hour period because he lost 1 million overnight while Westbrook doubled hers. Then another beauty Youtuber, Jeffree Star, got involved and called Charles a “predator” and “danfer to society.” Although that‘s only the main argument. Many believe that it was the incident of Charles not promoting Westbrook’s beauty ingestible brand, Halo Beauty, and promoted her competing brand, SugarBearHair, all because the company helped Charles with some security issues during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

This scandal luckily is not as big as it was when it first occurred and has quieted down since then. Charles managed to create a response video to Westbrook after coming back from the break he took away from social media when everything seemed to start falling downhill for him. He managed to clear his name the best he could and shared his side of the story both in words and pictures, which are screen shots of his messages between him and those "straight guys" he's encountered. Charles managed to win some of his subscribers back and is now on track again, continuing to make content for his views and growing his channel once again.

But why are the creators in the beauty community so vile towards each other? Don't worry, there are still those who remain close friends with each other. In my opinion, it just seems like they're in a giant Hunger Games and if you stay with the right people then become friends, you're guaranteed to survive long enough before you abandon them. Either that or it's a stereotypical high school setting where certain people backstab their friends then move on to a different group of friends where history then repeats itself. Obviously there is other dramas out there other than an accusation of someone tricking another's sexuality, this one between Tati Westbrook and James Charles is just quite the popular one that will leave a dent in YouTube drama history.

  1. I totally agree. The beauty industry is toxic. Another great example could be Jeffree Star vs. Kylie Jenner when he slammed her make-up line and then skincare products :(
