Benefits of Social Media:
There are many different forms of social media out there today,
approximately 72% of the population use social media as a result of that it can
be one of the most influential forms used to persuade and open up viewers eyes
to a different world beyond blue and sunny sky.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez, Elton John, Barack Obama now these are
some names that almost anyone should be able to realise in today’s society.
Usually when reading about famous influencers they are negative or criticizing
them individually but today this is something different, I’m expressing my view
on how famous people use social media to influence others. A handful of famous
singers, actors, musicians, athletes etc have used there social media platform
to benefit the world around us. They have influenced individuals just buy
posting images to raise awareness and get others on board in creating a change
for example pollution, global warming, deforestation and that’s just listing a
few.
The way famous
individuals have used social media by being activist or promoters to raise
awareness on topics that are impacting the Earth and the way we live today has
positively impacted me in different ways like signing up to protest, being more
aware of the consequences of my actions or raising money. Social media is used
in almost very part of the world so it allows influencers to reach a wider
audience and have a larger beneficial impact on many people. The way sharing,
posting, tagging etc spreads news faster than words, its not like a game of
“chines whispers” where things can be twisted because the news that is promoted
by activist or promoter is truthful and sup their believes and values towards a
topic. From a personal point of view I know for a fact as a teenager I don’t
watch the news at night 99% of the time but I’m 100% on my phone for more than
2 hours a day on average and according to https://www.statista.com/statistics/433871/daily-social-media-usage-worldwide/ “As of 2018, the average daily social media
usage of internet users worldwide amounted to 136 minutes per day” I
personally believe that more people find out more about what is happening
around the world and the impacts than a 1 hour news show that they can select
what is broadcasted but once something is out their on the internet it will
always be out there.
The techniques
famous influences have used in their post are eye catching, engaging and
interesting to the viewer, it makes them want to know more about the image and
feel more involved if they take part in the campaign. Some post that have had
an influential impact on audiences are Leonardo DiCaprio post about being an
environmentalist, he has raised awareness to his 35 Million followers on
Instagram about many environmentalist issues like domestic waste in Jakarta
Indonesia or one of the most recent tragedies the Amazon rainforest Burnings
and has set up a link for the viewers to help donate for the massive losses
that were created in the fire. To support his campaign for the the Amazon Fires
his funding payed off because according to https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/26/leonardo-dicaprio-pledges-5-million-to-reduce-amazon-rainforest-fires.html
he pledges $5 Million to reduce fires in the Amazon. Another
very influential individual is Emma Watson, she is one of the biggest women’s
rights activist. Her social media platform reaches over 51 Million people
daily, she reaches out to women on social media to not only raise awareness on
the issue but to get women involved and stand up for their rights. Emma has
published many post and videos of her speeches, articles, protest encouraging
and promoting women’s rights across the world just buy broadcasting on social
media.
Yes, social media does have its down side but without social media the
world around us could be very different, the way things spread to aware people,
inform and open peoples eyes to a range of different things is hugely
beneficial. Some may choose to “use and abuse” social media but for some that
would like to do the right thing in today's world have the fantastic
opportunity to do so.
Do you use social media to influence others about what is happening
around us? Write in the comments and let me know your thoughts.
