Why Seeking Validation through Social Media is bad for you
Validation from strangers through
Social Media can have a negative impact on your life. It can become an obsession or addiction; it’s
not real; can make you narcissistic and be time consuming.
Seeking validation through
Social Media can become an obsession or at its worst an addiction. An obsession would be checking your posts or
photos for likes often throughout the day.
An addiction is that obsession taken to a higher degree; where you would
almost constantly check for updates on your post. An addiction is more impactful on your life. As an addiction you would do whatever is
necessary to get positive affirmation via Social Media. This could result in financial strain as you
purchase the clothes or merchandise needed for a particular “look”. It also has a mental and emotional impact as
well as a social impact when people are more concerned with their on-line
presence rather than their real-life.
It’s not real. Many photographs on Social Media are edited
whether that is touch-ups of lighting, colouring, or changing physical
attributes. Photographs are often of
“perfect” moments so it appears as if that person’s life is better than yours. We are comparing ourselves with something
that is unattainable because it’s not real.
It’s narcissistic. With enough time and enough validation you
would become conceited which gives rise to the possibility that if something on
Social Media isn’t received well you become overly concerned about it. That adds to mental instability. Social Media is contributing to the growing
opinion that your opinion on every topic matters. People comment on topics sometimes without
any background knowledge thinking that they are right.
It’s time consuming. You have limited time on Earth, there’s
better things to do than seek validation from strangers on the Internet. So stop wasting your time seeking the validation
of others and live your life.
