SOCIAL MEDIA VS MENTAL HEALTH

Hey folks, today we will be discussing the effects of social media and the relation with affecting the populations mental health. Social media and technology it self has taken a big toll on todays society; over 3.8 billion people use the internet today, which is 40% of the world's population, this gives a brief overview how our populations are connecting with one another. According to Statista, in 2017 (the most recent year for which full data is available), people spent 135 minutes per day, or nearly two and a half hours, on social media. That's up from 2016, when people averaged 126 minutes per day.

Pro: Raises awareness

One of the benefits of social media is the ability for a person or organisation to raise awareness of an important issue to a mass audience quickly such as mental health awareness groups are widely spread on social media to create and pick up attention from users all across the globe because its one of the biggest servers used. Every day, more people are using social media to promote change and make a positive difference around the world. An example of this occurred in January this year when an advertising company posted a photo of an egg on Instagram with the aim to become the most liked photo ever on the platform. In just nine days, the photo did in fact achieve this milestone, receiving more than 52 million likes and 8.6 million followers to date... this just comes to show how social media can be a major impact to todays society.

Can combat loneliness

Us as human beings, with an inbuilt need to interact, socialise and connect with one another. Social media is often blamed for replacing face to face interactions, however for some people, social media is a great platform to facilitate conversations with like-minded people and build friendships. For example, a recent survey found that senior citizens are using social media to stay connected to the outside world. The survey of 1,000 pensioners suggested that 7 in one respondants use Facebook to keep in touch and interact with family and friends.

Cons: Can increase loneliness

Social media tends to get the attention of many around the globe; the more we spend time on our screens the more we lose connection with our surroundings and face to face socialisation around us. Despite the fact that social media was desgned to increase social interaction, a survey has found that people who spent more time on social media every day felt lonlier than those who checked their social media less. The survey also found that people who were on their phones more often were also more likely to feel anxious, depressed and lonely.

Cyberbullying

Social media is a database that creates opportunities to meet people that are like minded and also create postive relationships and dicussions but also social media has its bad side of creating common issues such as cyberbullying and trolling online that has a huge impact on our population; such as the effects of depression, anxiety and also the liklieness of an individual to commit suicide. Cyberbullying is the use of technoogy to harass, bully and also to intimidate an individual. Reports and statistics are suggesting that cyberbullying is on the increase according to recent research; Sadly cyberbullying is an ongoing issue and is very difficult for social media platforms to decrease these stats.

Concluding this wide spread topic

For you to ensure that you get the benefits out of social media while avoiding the negative side, it’s important to limit your time using it and ensure that you’re using it for the right reasons. While it allows us to search for anything we need and enables us to build meaningful relationships, communities and connections, overall the idea of social media does sound futuristic but also scary; in these terms everyone needs to learn to have time divided in real life and a screen otherwise it can take up a chuck of your life and have a bad impact on your future...
