The Negatives and Disadvantages of Social Media

A
s a teenager, how do we see social media? It's used every single minute of the day but is it really a good thing in our life? Let's discuss the negatives of social media, the disadvantages it causes to young individuals such as ourselves.

For one, it is addicting but I can be easily ceased when necessary or with a strong mindset that I'm not going to do it’. It's become so bad that everyone will just touch and turn on their devices simply to check the time.

It's like we have forgotten to actually physically use our heads to find a wall clock, to use our eyes and observe the long point, ticking in a circular motion until it reaches an hour. Is it come to the reason that it's just more accessible? That is true because we can't carry a clock wherever we walk but a portable device - such as a phone - can in fact be way easier. Even at supposed family dinners, parties or the habit of scrolling through the media at midnight, we are always on it.
On a regular day basis, social media makes us feel good. To the satisfying click on the home button or taking a screen shot, we love it!

One thing I can agree on, people don't receive enough sleep anymore. When we were kids, there were no phones for a twelve-year-old. There were trees, neighbourhood friends and the occasional ice cream truck to keep us sleeping well. Now at eighteen, I see it differently. Social media will continue to grow and we will become interested and involved even more than time goes on.

Then things turn down faster than you expect, bullying. There will always be a bullying happening to someone close, whether it be you or your best friend. Everyone comments on a person's post, sharing it to others. I'm sure all of us can agree that once one person knows something, it spreads like wild-fire. Particularly in schools, that's where it all swarms around, the rumours, the lies. Next the school fights and the suspensions, we don’t want that!

Now what the parents want to know, does it affect school grades? It's really up to the learner isn’t it? They can choose their time wisely by studying whenever they need to. Blaming it on social media or the entire world of ‘internet’, is wrong. A student can turn off their device and study, there's no other way of explaining it, its simply basic knowledge.

I know all too well, that Social media is a huge time waster. You can check how much time you spend daily on your device through settings, but you can also change those said settings to make your phone shut off when maximum hours is reached. I could use just countless scrolling for necessary things. I could definitely use my free ‘phone time’ to study or start cooking dinner. When it comes down to it, I'm just so involved with social media that I use it most of my hours a day. Though I'm not addicted, I could easily leave my phone alone when I want or need to.

It gets to where I don't want to finish my school work so I read or play a game on my phone. Sometimes, I use it as a reward for when I'm finished work, or it's used for my motivation. Especially when, I need to walk or run. Instead of watching Netflix on my phone, I watch it through my TV while running or walking. It affects my health in both ways. Yes, I'll sit on a couch and watch a funny video, but I would also use it to an advantage for exercise.

You need a person, a friend. It's almost human nature to have a fear of being alone. No one wants a dark void to walk through in their life. They want a source of light, so they can see where to walk on.. but using social media to fill that hole, it's not the way to see light. Yes, it's accessible, but it also puts a huge strain to your life. I believe using it for business terms is acceptable, not sharing and creating a mess for depressed and antisocial teens. Use time to the best, don't waste it on the Internet.
