 Negatives of social media

How many hours are teens spending on
Social media? According to Common Sense
Media, teens are spending an average of nine
Hours a day online with 60% of them aged
13-17 saying they spend too much time on
social media. Social media addiction effects
nearly half of teens which is a shocking fact, a
study by Erika Edwards and Maggie Fox
says that teens would rather text someone than
speak to them face to face, social media
addiction is a very serious thing affecting so
many people. Addiction can cause isolation,
depression, low self-esteem, loss in productivity,
and low confidence levels which is a big factor
in teen suicides.

Does social media affect school grades for teens? According to Professor Markus Appel it does, Markus came up with four different results of his analysis which are listed below

• The first result: Teenagers who use social media to communicate about school-related topics tend to have slightly better grades.

• The second result: Teenagers who use Instagram and the likes a lot while studying or doing their homework, tend to perform slightly worse than other students. This form of multi-tasking seems to be rather distracting.

• The third result: Students who log into social networking sites very frequently, regularly post messages and photos and spend a lot of time there have slightly lower grades. This negative effect is however, very small.

• The fourth result: Pupils who are active on social media do not spend less time studying. So there is no scientifically verified proof of social media stealing valuable time for schoolwork from pupils.

So the question is, does the use of social media cause poorer performance and marks at school? Or do worse performing teenagers spend more time on social media? We cannot say for sure whether using social media can cause poorer performance at school because there is not enough evidence to support either argument.

One of if not the biggest issue surrounding social media is using it to cyber bully other people, this issue is mainly focused around teenagers 13-17, did you know every 7 seconds someone is cyberbullied? Shocking isn’t it, using social media to cyber bully someone can cause the victim to isolate them self from everyone they love which can to lead to severe depression and anxiety, they will usually find any excuse to stay away from school/work and could have a change in mood.

It can be very hard to support someone who is a victim of cyberbullying, the best thing to do is to show them that you care and encourage them to do stuff and stay positive! In serious cases you should consider getting professional help,

Using social media before bed can be detrimental to your sleeping habits. From not being able to stop scrolling to needing to be up to date with your favourite celebrity, getting sleep can often be an afterthought. Studies have shown a link between social media and sleep, and the majority seem to point towards a negative correlation between the two.

So in my opinion social media can be very useful and fun thing to use but everyone needs to be aware of the risks that can come with it.
