How social media has changed sports
Social media is forever changing the way sports stars,
officials and fans interact with each other. Spectators no longer can just
watch the game, they can get all the action and news straight from the source. Social media is making it so fans can have more access to the sport, this can
affect the players as now they will have to watch out what they post or comment
on social media. The fans aren’t the only ones to benefit from social medias
effect on the sporting world, companies now use the popularity of teams and
athletes to gain online exposure. For example, Manchester United has a deal
with popular car company Chevrolet and Real Madrid has partnered up with German
company Adidas. Sporting bodies are also developing their own media platforms and companies, like NBA TV and AFL Media, bypassing the traditional news media to broadcast their own games and break their own news. This changing media landscape, where sports organisations can tell their stories directly to their fans through their own social or digital channels, is making it more difficult for traditional news journalists to get access to athletes or coaches.
Social media can have both positive and negative impacts on sporting organisations. Awareness is key to recognising new opportunities and avoiding common traps and costly mistakes. Sports organisations have done very well to utilize this for elevated fan engagement. Today, almost every sports clubs are using Twitter to give live updates of an ongoing match. Clubs are also using the platform for many other updates. Not only does Twitter engage its users with a link between a team and its fans, it also has a fan to fan interaction, creating a sense of community within a fan base. Many clubs have their own club page, Facebook and Twitter have become popular for sports fans to follow the club that they support and stay up to date with all the latest news and results.

Despite many positives, there are also negative affects social media have caused on sports. For example, bad content can be spread over the internet faster than ever. Negative comments from a fan could result in a bad performance by the athlete or team.
Social media will continue to grow and the engagement of social media in sports is one of the most significant issues in the sports industry.
